Ed’s Spuntino cafe in Hobart CBD is the crème de la crème of Italian cafes and is sure to impress. You know in the movies when the main protagonist seems like an important member of the community and they have their local café where everyone there knows their name, their order and you think: geee, that seems nice….. Well for all you lucky souls living in Hobart, that’s Ed’s.
Ed’s Spuntino Cafe Venue
A little “hole-in-the-wall” café on Bathurst Street run by father-son duo, Peter and Ed, it’s got all you could possibly want in a top-notch local café. Their coffee is expertly picked by the Melbourne-inspired coffee connoisseur Ed himself. Perfectly brewed smooth and strong (the real-deal, no coffee-flavoured milk here). Peter runs the food, pouring his heart and soul into all the Italian goodies he so lovingly prepares right in front of you.
Ed’s Spuntino‘s intimate, communal-style café is an experience as much as it is good food. With warm, funky lighting and a steel bench centerpiece separating the communal seating from the kitchen. It’s like sitting down to eat in the cozy kitchen of a friend’s house. My first time at Ed’s, as I enjoyed the best French mushroom Omelet I’ve ever had, I chatted with who would become my new friends at my favourite café. Both Ed and Peter learned my name and coffee order that day and are yet to forget 🙂
The communal style and warm vibes means there’s always a friend to be made at Ed’s – perfect for those new to Hobart
Ed’s Spuntino Food
If I haven’t yet convinced you that Ed’s on Bathurst is a must-visit, then hopefully their food will. Ed’s is up-there with the best of Italian cooking that Hobart has to offer. Their breakfast menu is simple, of high-quality ingredients and delicious! Arguably the definition of Italian cuisine – try any of their omelets and see for yourself.
The lunch menu offers a range of home-cooked pastas (made to order). You can’t go past the meatballs, made with parmesan and raisons for the perfect salty-sweet combo. If you’re there in Winter, I hear Peters’ hearty Minestrone soup is famous for making you feel right at home.
If the savories don’t make you salivate then the sweets surely will. There’s a rich and heavenly Tiramisu, cannoli’s or lemon polenta cake. My favourite is the hazelnut and ricotta torte – not too sweet but rich and delicious with a hint of citrus and served with cream for extra decadence.
We mustn’t forget the fresh muffins baked daily! Try their Carrot cake and cream cheese frosting or raspberry muffin with cinnamon glazed walnuts. Pair it with a coffee for the perfect day-starter.
Tip: Make sure to try their omelets and don’t miss the Hazelnut and Ricotta torte!
So, with excellent food and coffee plus the beautiful community feel, so lovingly packaged up into one cozy café that could only be found in Hobart. Ed’s is the best of the best. For someone who tends to prefer to give many places a try, I’m not usually one for repeat visits to this degree. But, when you find a gem like this that also knows your name and coffee order, geee, it’s nice.
