Whether you’re a pastry snob, sweet tooth or just looking for a quick and delicious bite, this is the article for you. Here are the top three bakeries in Hobart. From this list you will find excellent pastries sure to satisfy even the harshest of critics.
Queen’s Pastry
Location: 144 Harrington street, Hobart Tasmania 7000.
Price: $$
There’s no way I could write a blog about the culinary gems of Hobart without mentioning Queens Pastry. It was actually my mum who introduced me to Queens shortly after I moved here (She is the CEO of discovering local gems). Nonetheless, it has been my favourite spot for a buttery, flaky treat ever since! They specialise in assorted croissants and delicious donuts. I typically choose a plain croissant that’s still hot from the oven because you can’t go wrong when simplicity is executed so perfectly.
If you’re feeling a little extra, their Pain au chocolat, cinnamon pecan scroll and almond croissants (filled with real custard) are to die for. Not only are they the queens of croissants, but their donuts are famous too! Baked fresh daily and with a mouth-watering selection of flavours, you’ll have to get a box to try them all! My recommendations, however, are their original glaze and strawberry meringue donuts.
Tip: Don’t miss out on the ultimate Queen’s experience, make sure you go at one of their bake times to get your pastry fresh from the oven at either, 7:30am, 8:45am or 10:30am
Pigeon Whole Bakers
Location: 32 Argyle street, Hobart Tasmania 7000
Price: $$$
If you are new to Hobart, it won’t be long before you hear about Pigeon Whole, it’s the mother of all bakeries, providing their goodies to cafes all around Hobart. But be warned! Their popularity is not to be underestimated, don’t make the mistake I did and rock up at midday when everything has already flown out the door! They say the best time to go is between 7am – 9am when everything is fresh, and all the options are still available.
Their pastry selection will make your mouth water, my ‘cannot-resist’ choice is their famous Morning bun. A scroll of buttery pastry coated with cinnamon and cardamon- truly divine. Pigeon Whole is also where I’ve had the best baguette sandwich ever. Their vegetarian baguette with paprika-marinated cauliflower and a creamy sauce was phenomenal. In my experience, the best bakeries can not only execute technical perfection but can create delicacies with expertly picked flavour combinations too. This is the sign of chef-tier quality and Pigeon Whole has this in the bag.
An old roommate of mine used to work across the street and would sometimes bring home fresh bread from Pigeon Whole, These were very exciting days, and the fresh loaves would be gobbled up faster than you can say ‘stale’.
Jackman & McRoss
Location: 57 Hampden Rd, Battery Point Tas 7004
Price: $$$
The OG bakery of Hobart, Jackman & McRoss has been serving up treats since 1994 making it a legacy for a reason. They bake on-premise and to a high quality with a very wide variety of goodies to choose from. My personal favourite treats include their lamb and rosemary pie, duck and cranberry sausage roll and the fruit tart.
Their popularity has resulted in multiple Jackman and McRoss bakeries cropping up around Hobart but the original one is my recommendation. There is something about Battery Point that is so quintessentially Tasmanian, you would be wrong not to spend some time there. The old houses, windy streets and antique lamp-posts give it quaint and cosy vibes you can’t find anywhere else – This bakery fits right at home here.
Tip: Try their home brew Chai latte – it’s phenomenal!
